Evelyn Harris, the beloved vocalist and longtime member of the acclaimed ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock, passed away peacefully, leaving a profound void in the music community and the hearts of all who knew her. Based in Northampton, Massachusetts, Evelyn was celebrated for her extraordinary voice, her unwavering dedication to musical education, and the inspiring presence she brought to every stage and classroom.
The Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA) shared a heartfelt statement, expressing the depth of their loss. “It is with a heart full of sorrow that we report that IMA received word this afternoon that vocalist Evelyn Harris (Sweet Honey in the Rock, Stomp Box Trio, Young at Heart Chorus) has died. Evelyn has been a part of the IMA family for years, first as a friend of June’s during her Sweet Honey years and later as faculty during our summer programs. She gave IMA the best she had, which was an exceptional musicality steeped in the church and seemingly channeled straight up out of the earth—giving voice to all. We are proud to have had Evelyn on staff giving our students a direct transmission of that power. Her death was sudden as far as we know; she died peacefully. Rest now, dear sweet sister. You carried a load your entire life. May you rest in the power of knowing you gave us your all.”
Evelyn’s musical journey spanned decades, blending the rich traditions of African-American spirituals with contemporary expressions of harmony, rhythm, and social consciousness. As a member of Sweet Honey in the Rock, she captivated audiences with her powerful vocals and profound stage presence, helping to carry forward the ensemble’s mission of activism through music. Beyond performance, Evelyn was deeply committed to mentorship and education, dedicating herself to sharing her artistry with younger generations. Her work with Stomp Box Trio and the Young at Heart Chorus exemplified her passion for community engagement and lifelong learning, bringing joy and inspiration to countless students and music lovers.
Colleagues, students, and friends remember Evelyn as a person of exceptional warmth, generosity, and spirit. Her teachings went beyond technical instruction; she imparted a love for music that resonated in every note she sang and every lesson she gave. For those at IMA and beyond, she was a beacon of artistic integrity, resilience, and heart, whose influence will continue to shape the lives of aspiring musicians for years to come.
Evelyn Harris’ legacy is one of passion, devotion, and transformative artistry. She leaves behind a world profoundly enriched by her talent and her love for music. Though she is no longer with us, the echoes of her voice and the lessons she imparted will endure, inspiring all who had the privilege of experiencing her music and her life. May she rest in peace, her extraordinary spirit forever celebrated.
